I had learned of this workshop way back in January while chatting with April and Jen over some drinks at the Tuesday’s Together Madison Christmas party at Hollander. April and Jen had me when they said Lake Superior and Barn in the same sentence.
Fast forward a few weeks when I finally said I’m doing this for real! My loving and supportive husband said “you need this”, and he bought me the workshop ticket for my big 40! YAY!
The last weekend in April finally arrived! I was pumped to head north and loose myself in creativity and dig into some good business talk too. I carpooled with Amy and Elizabeth to make the drive fun with girl talk. We even stopped for a moment to see my sister, who lives 25 mins from the Lake Superior Barn. Thank you Amy and Elizabeth! And more Thank-yous to Amy who drove the whole way there and back.
We arrive and drive down a long windy gravel road that we are sure is not the place. We round the last bend and a lovely barn and wide expanse to the lake greets our welcome. We arrived early so we padded around the property enjoying nature’s beauty. The explore north staff was inside prepping the final touches for our first look inside. We walked to a warm greeting with rustic charm. I felt like a kid at camp ready to find my bunk. So fun! I went upstairs to find a warm hand written note on my bed saying welcome. All of my responsibilities, worries, and fears had melted. I had officially escaped to my beloved northwoods. Once unpacked we went to the HUGE kitchen-living area to meet our new life long friends. We were greeted with more warm welcomes and a some goodies in a cute swag bag with our personalized names hand painted on the canvas.
That my friends was the beginning of a 72 hour conversation of like minded creatives who bonded over birch trees, campfires, driftwood on the beach, and one special surprise the last night we were together. Which you will have to read about in blog series two.
We dove in the very next morning with a styled engagement shoot at 9am. This couple was the bomb! They not only cooked amazing food for us all weekend, but looked stunning as our models for this shoot. I even brought my little 35mm nikon N60 along and with the encouragement from my new friends, I shot a few to see if I could. I think I can, I think I can…. 🙂
THANK-YOU to April Zelenka, Jen Dederich, and Shaunáe Teske for dreaming up this adventure. Your teachings and love is more than any of could have hoped for on this weekend of learning, sharing, and joyfulness.
Thank you as well to the amazing sponsors for this workshop that ooooed and ahhhed us with awesome deals and giveaways!
