Marit and Brice are Married – A Wedding for the History Books
When Marit initially contacted me, it was to possibly photograph her wedding in late July. Things were uncertain. Brice’s mother was fighting cancer, so the wedding may be delayed. We talked over lunch about family and heritage. I knew I liked her right away. Even if this wedding did not happen, I was going to keep in touch. Marit is cool. Bottom line. Marit is a student of Norwegian history and fluent in Norwegian. Pretty cool huh? Told you. My husband’s family (Halvorsons) would be delighted with her knowledge. She was off to Norway to study abroad for a few months and we promised we would keep in touch. I prayed for Brice’s mother to get well and for Marit and Brice to have the family wedding of their dreams.
Well good news came! Marit contacted me and asked if I had July 23rd open. I was thrilled! We set to work right away with planning out the details. I did not want to miss anything that was special to her heart.
Speaking of details, AMAZINGLY MEANINGFUL! I have to start with the rings. Marit’s engagement ring was her maternal grandmother’s (Grandma Bjorkman) engagement ring. Brice and Marit’s wedding bands are made from his paternal grandfather’s (Grandpa Dally) wedding ring. The seven diamonds from Grandpa’s ring are now in Marit’s wedding band. Brice used the original gold for his wedding band and kept original markings. This is so special and unique and from the heart. I love it!
Ok and the floral crown, is to die for! AMAZING work Sunborn Gardens! A few cool things about the crown. The ribbons are from Marit’s mother’s wedding dress. And on the back is a Sølje. Sølje is Norway’s traditional silver jewelry. It was thought that the dangling spoons would reflect evil away from the wearer. Evils such as trolls for example. OH my! This was an important piece to wear in times of transition. How cool that Marit incorporated this tradition in her floral crown.
Now I must share how they met. This is an “arranged marriage” as they say. Brice’s mother and Marit’s mother work together. The coworkers were chatting one day and said “hey our kids should meet”. So they set them up on a date. The rest is history!
And speaking of history, Marit said “history never stops.” So true! We were lucky enough to have access to the Wisconsin Historical Society to take photos in on and around the building. The last couple to have access to the outdoor balcony, were the Obamas! Marit and Brice felt like and looked like royalty up that stately balcony addressing their friends and family. Then we quickly walked to the union for a few photos. Rain or no rain they went for it!
Congrats to Marit and Brice and wishing you two all the best. I was honored and blessed to be part of your day.
Cheers- Erin Melissa
